Zoe Gleason And Aaliyah Jackson Travel To San Francisco
Two of our own seventh grade students eagerly accepted an invitation to travel to San Francisco with the People to People program. Zoe Gleason-Volz and Aaliyah Jackson first received their invitation as sixth graders and both students worked very hard to prepare for their trip.
While in San Francisco, they visited Alcatraz. Their tour of this world famous prison was both eerie and educational. They learned a great deal about the prison and its occupants. Another landmark that the two young ladies visited was the Golden Gate Bridge. They were both taken back by the breathtaking views.
The girls traveled with an adventurous group. As a result, they went rock climbing and zip lining.
Both Zoe and Aaliyah feel that they learned a lot about themselves during their trip. They felt that they could handle bigger responsibilities because they were on their own for the first time in their lives. The girls also say that the trip made them realize that they have a lot in common with the other students they met. In the end, both Aaliyah and Zoe say they'll value the friendships and memories made on this trip.
People to People is a program developed by one of our former presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower. President Eisenhower believed that ordinary citizens of different nations, if able to communicate directly, were capable of extraordinary things. He felt that, together, they could solve problems and find a way to live in peace. In 1956, he held a conference that created this wonderful program that has allowed students to travel around the world in an attempt to exchange experiences and cultural values. Since its start, the ambassador program has allowed students to travel abroad or within our own continent. Thanks to this wonderful opportunity, many students return knowing what it means to be a good citizen and neighbor.
