Carly Wigmore
The most memorable experience of my life was when I went to Europe with the People to People Student Ambassador Program. I visited France and England. When walking off the plane in France and on to the tour bus, to my amazement I spotted the Arc de Triomphe. It was beautiful! We continued our tour of Paris, seeing the Louvre, an art museum that displays many famous paintings like the Mona Lisa. We also viewed the Tour Eiffel, a large monument built by Gustave Eiffel. The rest of my first day in Paris was spent shopping for postcards, key chains and other souvenirs. That evening I was assigned two friendly roommates, Alex and Charity. It was the start of a new friendship.
A few days later we visited Sacre Coeur. We walked up the steep hill to enter. I couldn't believe my eyes. I have many pictures and memories there. There was a choir inside singing, to my ears they sounded like angels. After listening and viewing the magnificence of Sacre Coeur, I had an art class. I learned how to draw the Mona Lisa. My friends and I thought it was great. We also took a French class. I knew everything that was being taught because I am a French major. Only one other girl and I already knew how to speak some French.
After several days in Paris, we took a long bus ride into the city of Mont St. Michel. When I first arrived there I was speechless. I just gazed up at the gorgeous architecture of the monastery. We soon were ready to leave France and travel to England. We went on an over night ferry, with another student ambassador group. I wasn't able to sleep that well and it was very cold.
When first arriving in England we stayed at a sailing academy. It was one of my favorite parts of the trip. Everyone there was so friendly. We spent 3 days there. We learned how to windsurf and sail. It was a lot of fun. I first sailed with my friend Chelsea. She and I were the best sailors in my group. We than had to have groups of three. Marc, Jorge and I were one group. It was funny how I started off with Chelsea, one of the best sailors and ended up with Marc and Jorge, who weren't the brightest sailors. Another activity was building and racing rafts. My team came in first place, even though when we were racing, I fell off. My friend Jorge helped me back on and we ended the race. The worst and best thing about the sailing academy was the wetsuits. They were very hard to get on and I even cut my finger. In the end it was all worth it because it kept me warm. Our last night at the sailing academy we had a dance. My delegation's theme was mustaches. We drew mustaches on our face and went to the disco.
Towards the end of my trip I was lucky enough to be able to visit and stay with a family in England. They had an eleven year old daughter and a seventeen year old son. They had a beautiful house, with a trampoline and a pond in their backyard. We went to a park not too far from their home with them. During the home stay, we still had some tours. We went to a cathedral. It was amazing. I can't even begin to describe my emotions at that time. After we said goodbye to our home stay families, we went to our last hotel.
I was really nervous about going on this wonderful trip, until I met the other Student Ambassadors. They were very encouraging and supportive plus a lot of fun. There were also four delegation leaders and one delegation Manager, who was funny and outgoing. Whenever someone wasn't feeling too well he always knew how to cheer them up. I would definitely recommend this trip to other young teens like myself. It was a learning experience I'll never forget.
