Ballet

At the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School, our Ballet Curriculum focuses on allowing students to appreciate the discipline and beauty of dance. It is based on the progression from the Vagonova method which was developed by Agrippina Vagonova, a Russian teacher who created a system that results in complete technical mastery by the student of exercises at the barre and in the center of the studio. National Dance Standards are also being applied to the curriculum.

K-5 Students will develop an awareness of the body as an instrument of expression, learn dance vocabulary terminology, and use elements of space, time, and effort/dynamics. They will also experience creative expression through choreography and perform at PPACS annual productions. Students will become more aware of the diversity of heritage and cultures through dance.

Dance Majors are learning intensive skills of Vagonova technique which includes 7 1/2 hours of classes per week. They learn choreography and Pointe work weekly. After the New Year, Students will choreograph their own dance piece where they will utilize creative expression, movement, and formations. Students are assessed on facility, classroom technique, work habits, and performance, as well as, learning terminology and history of dance/videos. Student rehearsals for performances are scheduled throughout the day and after school. Students will attend Pennsylvania Ballet's series of ballets and have an opportunity to audition for Pennsylvania Ballet's Nutcracker.
