General Academics
We offer our students a comprehensive program that emphasizes both artistic and academic excellence. Our K-8 teachers follow the School District of Philadelphia's new Core Curriculum: Teaching to Proficiency for literacy, mathematics, science and social studies. These curriculum guide documents are grade-level, content-specific and represent the work of colleagues, community and university partners, and national consultants. Each curricular document has three components: A Year at a Glance, Planning and Scheduling timeline, and the Core Curriculum that describes standards-driven, instructional best practices written to include the rich cultural heritage and diverse learning styles of all of our students.
These documents are aligned to PA State standards, support teachers in raising the bar for increased student outcomes, and provide for consistent, quality instruction. The curriculum identifies what proficient teaching "looks like" in daily practice and what student outcomes "look like" at proficient levels of performance. If students are asked to reach proficient levels of performance, teachers must teach at proficient levels. There must be academic rigor both in curriculum content and in the manner in which content is delivered.
The curriculum can be viewed on the School District of Philadelphia website: www.phila.k12.pa.us
