Creative Writing

The overall goal of the creative writing program is to build upon the writing skills the students learn in the school by teaching the students how to write expressively and creatively. By expanding writing styles and approaches, the students learn to conform their writing for a variety of audiences and genres. Studies include journalism, fiction and non-fiction, poetry, public speaking and playwriting. The students explore the creative elements of writing through reading and writing their own publications. The program is designed to foster artistic expression, explore the functions and value of writing, stimulate imagination and clarify thinking. Students also learn how to study the writing of other authors and work cooperatively to generate discussion about this work.

In the early grades, these classes teach the students how to expand their writing skills and become creative thinkers. By studying the work of their favorite authors and following the modeling of the teacher, the students learn how to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas through writing.

The creative writing majors explore many different genres and types of writing throughout the school year. The students are responsible for the creation and distribution of the school newspaper. They also explore narrative writing through fiction and nonfiction. They use the skills they acquire to generate plays and other entertaining literature. The members of this class learn how to conform their writing to meet the needs of a variety of audiences and genres.
