2008 Winter Concert
Posted May 23, 2009

On Wednesday, December 17th 2008, students at the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School presented guests with their Winter Concert. The show included performances by our many art classes.

Upon arrival, guests perused an uplifting art and poetry display featured in the lobby. This remarkable presentation was the work of the art and creative writing majors. The two groups spent several weeks preparing their work for the show.

The show opened with the choir's rendition of Hallelujah from Messiah and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring with our very own Daniel Thai as accompanist. From here, the orchestra entertained show-goers with Carol of the Bells. The next performance featured our ballet majors dancing to Gamzati from La Bayadere with 8th grade student Moreen King as the featured soloist. The next piece they danced to was Variation from Paquita. 8th graders Santina Palmiere and Ciarra Dougherty-Colon both had a solo. When the strings grew silent, the curtain opened and the Concert Choir sang Lullaby on the Wind and Sleigh Bells. As a special treat, the String Orchestra played The Skater's Waltz as Dylan Anderson, Alexa Ciero, Samantha DiMatteo, Pernell Francis, Adam Moskowitz and Erica Pezzano danced. Finally, the 1st act came to and end after the ballet majors wowed the audience with Waltz of the Flowers.

As the curtain rose for the 2nd half of the show, students paid tribute to our brave police and firefighters. With the recent tragedies involving Philadelphia's officers, the students of our creative writing department felt compelled to act. 8th grade student, Nicholas Giordano, wrote a heartfelt letter addressed to our police and fire commissioners. Both men read the letter and responded with sincere gratitude. To further thank them, we honored those officers within our own school family. These brave men and women stood on stage with Commissioner Ramsey to receive a heart-felt thank you from Dr. Avicolli and the entire school. To top off this emotional tribute, the 3rd grader Emily Brennan and a select ensemble of students serenaded everyone with a tear jerking rendition of Danny Boy.

From here, our second act began with a bang. The ballet majors began with several excerpts from The Nutcracker. Following this was a piano solo by Saaya Spearman. Everyone watched in awe as the fourth grade student played Mozart's Sonatina 1. From here, the junior choir sang three lovely holiday favorites: Jinglin' Bells, Peace I Leave with You and I Can't Believe it's Christmas. The string orchestra continued the 2nd act with Mozart Menuetto. To liven things up, the concert choir did an upbeat rendition of It's the Holiday Season. When finished this song, the String Orchestra delighted guests with The Night Before Christmas as Matthew Brotnitsky narrated the classic tale. Finally, the stage was brought to life once more with a toe-tapping rendition of Feliz Navidad.
