Students Write Original Songs Through Residency with Art Alliance
November 7, 2008

On Friday, November 7th, students in our 3rd, 4th and 5th grades performed original songs and lyrics they composed during the Poets & Composers collaborative residency. This year's session was especially unique because students were introduced to Ernie & Neal. When they stepped into each classroom, students were captivated by their talent and energy. Everyone had a great time writing the songs and the two artists helped students form a deeper connection between their words and music.

Explanation of Program

Poets and Composers is an educational initiative that brings composers and poets into Philadelphia schools to teach students to write their own poetry and set it to music. The Philadelphia Art Alliance has implemented these residencies at other schools in or near the Philadelphia area. It first began during the spring semester of 2005. At each school, an Art Alliance poet and composer work with a groups of students over a specific period of time. In collaboration with the school's curriculum coordinator creative writing and music teachers, they teach students to write and perform their own songs. Each residency culminates with a final student performance for the school community.

This year's collaboration introduced students to Ernie and Neal. Together, the two bring their knowledge of song writing and musical production to students in the third, fourth and fifth grades. Over the course of a week, the pair works with each class. When the lyrics are written and the music is set, the final "jam session" is a chance for students to showcase their songs to an enthused audience.
