Student Wins Essay Contest

Creative Writing Student Wins Notable Contest

During Black History Month, our creative writing majors took part in a contest sponsored by the Johnson House in Philadelphia. This historic museum was used as a stop on the Underground Railroad. This year, they sponsored a contest commemorating the 322nd Anniversary of the "Protest Against Slavery". It was open to students from both public and private schools in grades 3-12. To enter, students wrote essays that responded to the following question: what was the impact of the civil rights movement?

While all of the students' entries were fantastic, one stood out from all the rest. Eighth grader, Theodore Fox, was recently notified that his essay won 1st place! He will be attending a special awards ceremony on March 14 where he was asked to share his work with an eager crowd. We are very proud of Theodore's accomplishment!

This is Theodore's essay...

The Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights Movement impacted the lives of many Americans in the United States and led to the freedom of blacks from segregation. Also, it made most Americans respect and embrace each other with love and affection. The Civil Rights Movement brought everyone together and helped bring racial peace to the world. This Movement integrated schools, public places, military, sports, and more. Thanks to the success of the Civil Rights Movement and the ending of segregation, our world is in peace and not as violent as it was in the mid 50s.

A big impact of the Civil Rights Movement is that schools were integrated. This gave the opportunity to all the children in the United States to get along with one another and learn not to hate people by their race or color. Also, all black children were given a better chance of having a good education and life. Another reason why this was a benefit was because it allowed whites to gain black friends and blacks to gain white friends. This was big because there was less discrimination and children were able to get along. Lastly, it had the chance to see that physical/ethnic differences don't make one superior.

Another huge impact of the Civil Rights Movement was that it integrated public places. This allowed blacks and whites to be in the same place without being thrown out of it. These places were basically anything from bars, restaurants, sports arenas, businesses, and more. These places helped whites and blacks to respect each other and learn to see that a person is a person. For the first time in our history, they could see that hating each other is not the way to go. So therefore, many people in the U.S.A soon began to see that this was a good benefit for the blacks and the whites to come together in harmony and unison.

Lastly, the impact of the Civil Rights Movement changed how people think and feel about different races overall. The Civil Rights Movement made the world a better place and brought everyone together. Whites began to respect the blacks and the blacks began to forgive the whites for everything that had happened during segregation. For the most part, everyone put behind everything that happened. Whatever your race was, you were finally seen as a person, just like everyone else. Races began to mean nothing thanks to the Civil Rights Movement. The world has become less violent thanks to it.

In the end, the Civil Rights Movement has made our world a better place and still continues today. Blacks and whites go to the same schools, places, restaurants, and more. The impact of it affected me because if it wasn't for the Civil Rights Movement and the ending of segregation I wouldn't have the friends I have now and would feel weird without being near other races. But thanks to the Civil Rights Movement we are able to be in harmony and peace.
