Three of our wonderful creative writing majors received an acknowledgement from the 2008 Letters about Literature, a contest co-sponsored in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Center for the Book and Target. Lark McAllister, Nicholas Giordano, and Dior Guaglione wrote essays that were placed in the top 50 for their category. This is a remarkable feat considering there was a total of 757 contestants nationwide. Although they did not win first place, the essays they entered were still excellent and received commendations.
Lark McAllister's letter was about how the book, Fever 1793, had an affect on her life. She explained to the author how the littlest things mentioned in the book changed her view about a lot of matters. Also, she told what she wanted to do in the future, thanks to the experiences that took place in the book.
Nicholas Giordano also read the book Fever 1793. His letter was about how he profited from the book and how it changed his view of life. He mentioned that it changed the way that he reacted to people. He also mentioned how he would not take anything for granted like he used to. Plus, he says that he will always remember the lessons he learned from this book.
Dior Guaglione read the book Things Not Seen. In her letter, she expresses moments when she felt isolated like the main character. She was not exactly invisible like him, she just felt like she was at times. She also explains how she took stuff for granted, just as the main character did. As the book ended, she thought about what it taught her. As a result, she will never forget the life long lesson she learned.
