Devonte was chosen to represent our school as part of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. The CYLC seeks people who have a good academic background and those who can be superior leaders. Students who are nominated are required to be mature and independent individuals. Participants must also be going into the 8th or 9th grade. While a seventh grader, Ms, Caiola chose Devonte as one of her nominees for this program. When he was asked to attend the conference, he gladly accepted.

The program focuses on eight core leadership power tools. These tools are communication, conflict resolution, decision making, goal setting, group dynamics, leadership techniques, project management, and self awareness. Scholars develop a plan of personal leadership to help them strengthen the skills they need to succeed in school and affect how they view their role as leaders in their communities. At the end of each conference, each student presents his or her perfected plan of personal leadership. The curriculum offers a distinctive approach to leadership training that creates a learning climate that is conductive to creative and critical thinking. Students gain the skills needed to think outside of the box and work collectively within a group.

After completing the conference, Devonte was given the opportunity of a lifetime. He was actually chosen to attend the Presidential Inauguration and Inaugural Ball. Due to his hard work and commitment, this young man will have a front seat to our nation's history. Our school is extremely proud of his accomplishments and can't wait to hear about his experiences!
